Summer Sunscreen 101
Tips for proper application and ways to keep skin safe in the sun.
The must-have accessory for summer? Sunscreen. No matter where you go or what you’re wearing, a layer of sunscreen is necessary to keep skin safe and burn-free this season.
Before you head out to enjoy some fun in the sun, grab an SPF of 30 or higher. It should be Broad Spectrum, which protects against the UVA and UVB rays that cause different types of damage. Here’s an easy way to remember which is which: UVA are the rays that lead to signs of aging. UVB are the rays that burn. (Get it? A and B!)
Now that you’ve got your SPF PhD, here’s how to wear it right:
1. Apply 30 mins before you go outside or in the water. This allows the sunscreen to be absorbed into your skin.
2. REAPPLY, REAPPLY, REAPPLY. Most sunscreens are only good for about 2 hours, maximum. This means you need to reapply often.
3. Did you go for a swim? Reapply when you dry to ensure protection.
4. Don’t skimp on the amount you use. Two finger lengths is a great guide for your face. You should also use two tablespoons of sunscreen for each exposed area.
5. Your scalp needs protection, too! You can use a spray sunscreen or grab a stylish hat
6. Ditch the lipsticks, which may have sun-attracting oils. Instead, make sure you are using lip balm with SPF in it- no one wants sunburnt lips!
