Skin-Saving Self Care You Need Now
Tips to help avoid mask-induced acne and more.
Masks are a part of life these days, and while they keep those around us safer, they can also wreak havoc on our skin. If you find that you’re breaking out after a long day of wearing your mask, we hear you. And, we’ve got you: Here are a few simple ways to alter your skincare routine for mask-wearing and help to reduce the acne that can come along with it.
Pick the Right Mask
When it comes to masks, not all are created equal for the skin. Disposable masks are breathable but can irritate your face after prolonged use. Similarly, fashion masks can feel comfortable but be harder to breathe in. There is a solution: If you’re opting for disposable, switch out masks every 3-4 hours to keep them from holding dirt and sweat close to your pores. If you favor a fashion mask, choose a breathable cotton material in at least two layers, and make sure you switch them (and wash them) daily. Whatever mask you pick, make sure it fits correctly: Snug, without gaping fabric, but not too tight that it impedes breathing. This may help reduce friction on your skin, too.
Skip the Heavy Makeup
Keep your usual foundation and blush up over the mask line, and opt for a simple moisturizer or a tinted moisturizer for the lower part of your face. Instead of your usual lipstick, choose a barrier like petroleum jelly or a water-based ointment to keep lips protected from the rubbing of your mask. When applying makeup, use a clean beauty buff of sponge, not fingers.

Bonus Tip: The Eyes Have It!
With your mouth covered, your eyes become your face’s focal point. Brighten them up using mascara, eyeliner, a brow liner and a light shadow. It will help make your eyes more expressive when friends can’t see your smile!

Keep Cleansing
Even if you’re wearing less makeup, cleansing is still the most important part of your beauty routine. Try a face cleanser with a light exfoliant while you’re in the shower, to help remove some of the sweat that’s been building up in your pores. Gently rub it (very gently!) in small circles around where your mask covers.

Be Kind to Skin
You may discover your skin is irritated from the constant friction of your masks. Because wearing a mask can trap sweat that can clog pores, you may want to consider a moisturizer that is lighter than your usual fare. Opt for soothing ingredients like cucumber, collagen, and cooling watermelon.

Add More (Beauty) Masks
If you’re already a fan beauty masks, you’re still going to want to level up the love. Alternate pore clearing and moisturizing beauty masks 2-4 times a week, depending on what your skin needs most. Choose skin-nurturing ingredients such as Vitamin C and pink sugars, or detoxers including charcoal. Bonus: It’s a great excuse for some quiet moments of self-care!
