Easter at Home

Ideas for celebrating the holiday safely and memorably as you practice social distancing.

With the country—and the world—still facing weeks of a quarantine, this Easter is different from any other we’ve celebrated. Still, it gives us a reason to break out of our rut and count our blessings, no matter how hard things have been. (And they have been hard.) Here are some ideas for making this holiday an extra special one filled with love, right at home. We’ve made a list that uses supplies you can find in your own home or for a low price at Gabe’s.

Make a Basket for Heroes

Consider spreading the holiday spirit by preparing a basket of cheer for local medical professionals and first responders. Fill it with candy, antibacterial gel, soaps, lotions, and, of course, a card thanking them for their service.

Decorate Eggs

It’s tradition, and it’s fun. Gather your family around to decorate eggs together and unwind. Write funny phrases, have a decorating contest, or come up with a family theme to make it a bit more fun this year. Possible supplies: Egg dying kits or food coloring and vinegar.

Neighborhood Egg Hunt, Quarantine Style

Check out your local social media pages and see if anyone has started a “drive by” egg hunt. If not, start one yourself! The idea is simple: Decorate paper eggs and hang them in windows where they can be seen. Then, drive around your neighborhood looking for eggs posted by others! Possible supplies: Crayons, paper, stickers, chalk markers for drawing on windows.

Video Chat Easter Egg Hunt

You can still have your family-wide Easter egg hunt—virtually! Have families hide eggs around their homes and then, using a video chat service, take turns “looking” through each other’s homes for the hidden goodies.

Family Dinner with Devices

Dinner is usually device-free fare, but this Easter it’s time to set a place for your phones. Video chat far-flung family and keep chatting through the meal—it will make the distance feel a little bit shorter. Possible supplies: Bluetooth speaker for better sound.
