Resolution Solutions

Create a plan to successfully stick to your resolutions.

You know how it is at the start of every year: A clean slate and the best intentions that somehow seem to fall off by February 1. Well, not this year! We’ve created a simple list of tips to help you stick to your resolutions for years to come. Here’s how.

Write It Down

Put down your phone and pick up a pen. Keeping a goal journal can help you to mindfully approach the tasks that lead to success, taking it all one step at a time. In addition, reading entries later on will help you see how far you’ve come in just a few weeks’ time.

First, start with an entry about the goal you’d like to achieve in the next 90 days, such as running a race or completing a class. Each day write three things you will do that day to help towards reaching your 90-day goal. At night, review what you were able to accomplish and what tasks were left undone. Include quotes that motivate you, make sure to pencil in time for yourself, and call out the things that you found helpful.  At the end of each week, assess your progress and continue on with what’s working.

Find an Accountability Partner

Hitting the gym or walking into an improv class is always easier with a friend by your side. Find someone with the same goals and level of experience and commit to each other for a full month of your selected activity. Text each other regularly to offer encouragement, and after 30 days, check in to see how you’re feeling about continuing. Then, make a longer commitment—try three months this time.

Not sure you can find a partner? There are plenty out there that you just haven’t met yet! Consider joining a  local group aligned with your interest (like running or hiking) or even reaching out on a local page on your preferred social network to find a friend.

Get Geared Up

There’s an old saying, “When you fail to plan you plan to fail.” Making a decision to lead a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money but making sure you have the equipment you need may make it easier once you begin. If you’re planning to hit the gym, make sure you’ve got a good pair of sneakers and some comfortable workout wear before your first day—not as you’re trying to get out the door. Planning healthy meals for your family? Check out some recipes and consider the kitchen items that can help, like an air fryer like cooks up all of their favorites with less fat.
